How does the knitting machine form a stitch?

How do I figure the gauge?

1) Start with contrast yarn of same yarn you will be using in the garment.
2) Cast On 60 stitches (L30 - R30).
3) Knit 8 rows in stockinette.
4) Make eyelets on left side for whole number of tension used and eyelets on the right side for points used.
For example: My tension dial is at 5.1 so I make five eyelets on the left side and 1 eyelet on the right side.
5) Knit 2 rows.
6) Take the contrast yarn out of the yarn feeder and put in the yarn you will be using in the garment.
7) Set the knitting machine for the pattern (tuck, slip, fair-isle, lace, etc) you will be using in the garment.
8) Take the stitch off of needle L21 and put it on either L20 or L22.
9) Push the needle back to A position.
10) Take the stitch off of needle R21 and put it on either R20 or R22.
11) Push the needle back to A position.
12) Knit 40 rows.
13) Take the yarn out of the yarn feeder and put in the contrast yarn.
14) Bring L21 into B position. You can put the bar of the stitch on L22 onto L21.
15) Bring R21 into B position. You can put the bar of the stitch on L22 onto L21.
16) Knit 10 rows and bind off.
17) Block the swatch like you plan on blocking the garment.
18) Measure the 40 stitches between the needles left in A (out of work) position. (These will be noticed on the swatch as the unknit stitch on both sides.)
19) Measure the 40 rows between the contrast yarns.
Your swatch will be 40 stitches by 40 rows. Take 3 different measurements for both stitches and rows. Use the average for each.
Example: You measure the 40 stitches and get 3.75 inches, 4 inches and 4.25 inches. Your average is 4 inches. If you measure the stitches and get 3.75, 4 and 3.75 use 3.75.

How To Figure Gauge?

When determining the gauge of your swatch, use the same factor as the written pattern. For example:

Stitches/rows to 1” = 4.5 sts x 6 rows
Stitches/rows to 4” = 18 sts x 24 rows
Stitches/rows to 1 centimeter = 4.5 sts x 6 rows
Stitches/rows to 10 centimeter = 18 sts x 24 rows

Use a hand held calculator or your cell phone calculator to calculate the Stitch Converter and the Row Converter measurements. Use up to 2 decimal points.

Stitch Converter

Take your stitch gauge and divide it by the pattern stitch gauge and the answer is the Stitch
Converter. For example:
Your swatch measures 29.5 stitches for 4 inches. The pattern gauge is 28 stitches for 4 inches. Divide swatch (29.5) by pattern (28) and the answer (stitch converter) is 1.0535.Round to 1.05.

How to use the Stitch Converter

If the pattern calls for 140 stitches, multiply the number of stitches (140) by the Stitch Converter answer (1.05) to get the number of stitches needed (147). If the pattern uses an even number of stitches add a stitch (148). Cast on the number of stitches needed.

Row Converter

Take your row gauge and divide it by the pattern row gauge and the answer is the Row Converter.
For example:
Your swatch measures 13.5 rows for 4 inches. The pattern row gauge is 12 rows for 4 inches. Divide swatch (13.5) by pattern (12) and the answer (row converter) is 1.1250. Round to 1.13.

How to use the Row Converter

If the pattern calls for 300 rows, multiply the number of rows (300) by the Row Converter answer (1.13) to get the number of rows needed (339). If the pattern uses an even number of rows add a row (340). Knit the number of rows needed.

E-wrap Cast-on

Double E-wrap Cast On

This is the method most commonly used when setting up to use the garter carriage.

DOUBLE E-WRAP CAST ON

Bring required needles to E position on Brother or Knitking machines or to D position on Silver Reed or Studio machines..

Begin at LEFT edge. Make a slip knot and place it onto the 1st needle.

Now take the yarn UNDER the 1st and 2nd needles.

Bring the yarn up between the 2nd and 3rd needles.

Lay the yarn over the TOP of both needles. (needles 1 and 2)

Place the yarn in the HOOK of the 1st needle and with thumb and push it to the B
position. You have manually knit off the 1st stitch.

Now, there should be a loop on the 2nd needle.

Now bring the yarn UNDER the 2nd and 3rd needles.

Bring the yarn UP between the 3rd and 4th needle.

Lay the yarn across the 2nd and 3rd needles.

Place the yarn into the HOOK of the 2nd needle. Manually knit off this 2nd needle.

Repeat this across the bed moving from left to right until all needles including the last needle are manually knitted off. The last needle just lay the yarn in the hook and knit it back.

Place the yarn into the yarn feeder on the carriage.
